Site Safety Basics: Protecting Yourself and Others

Every construction site has hazards. Understanding and managing them keeps you and others safe. Here are the fundamentals of site safety.

Risk Assessment

Before starting work, identify hazards:

  • Working at height
  • Moving vehicles and plant
  • Electrical hazards
  • Manual handling
  • Hazardous substances

Document risks and control measures for significant hazards.

Personal Protective Equipment

Minimum PPE on most sites:

  • Safety boots with toe protection
  • Hard hat where required
  • High-visibility clothing
  • Eye protection for specific tasks
  • Hearing protection near noise

Working at Height

Falls are the biggest cause of serious injuries:

  • Use appropriate access equipment
  • Check scaffolding is safe before use
  • Guard open edges
  • Never work on makeshift platforms
  • Consider harnesses for certain tasks

Electrical Safety

Electricity kills without warning:

  • Use 110V equipment on site
  • Check cables for damage before use
  • Keep cables out of traffic
  • Never work on live circuits
  • Use RCD protection

Manual Handling

Prevent back injuries:

  • Assess loads before lifting
  • Use mechanical aids where possible
  • Proper lifting technique
  • Get help for heavy or awkward items
  • Clear routes before carrying

Housekeeping

Tidy sites are safer sites:

  • Clear waste regularly
  • Store materials properly
  • Keep access routes clear
  • Manage cables and hoses
  • Clean up spills immediately

Welfare Facilities

Legal requirements include:

  • Toilets
  • Washing facilities
  • Drinking water
  • Rest area and means of heating food
  • First aid equipment

Emergency Procedures

Know before you need them:

  • First aid location and trained personnel
  • Fire assembly point
  • Emergency contact numbers
  • Location of nearest hospital

Safety isn't bureaucracy - it's coming home at the end of each day.
