Looking After Your Power Tools: Simple Maintenance Tips

Power tools aren't cheap. A bit of basic maintenance keeps them running longer and working better. Here's what actually matters.

Battery Care

Batteries are often the most expensive part of cordless tools. Look after them.

Do

  • Store batteries at room temperature
  • Keep batteries at 30-50% charge if storing for a long time
  • Use the charger that came with the tool (or genuine replacements)
  • Let hot batteries cool before charging

Don't

  • Leave batteries in freezing conditions
  • Let batteries fully discharge repeatedly
  • Leave batteries on the charger permanently
  • Use damaged or swollen batteries (replace them)

The DeWalt 18V XR batteries are robust, but they still benefit from proper care.

Keeping Tools Clean

Dust is the enemy. It gets into motors, clogs vents, and wears out moving parts.

After Each Use

  • Wipe down the housing
  • Clear dust from vents with compressed air or a brush
  • Check the chuck or blade for debris

Regular Cleaning

  • Clean battery contacts with a dry cloth
  • Check air vents aren't blocked
  • Inspect cables for damage (on corded tools)

Blade and Bit Care

Drill Bits

Blunt bits work harder, generate more heat, and give poor results. Sharpen or replace them before they're useless. Masonry bits especially need replacing regularly.

Saw Blades

A sharp blade cuts cleaner and puts less strain on the motor. Clean resin buildup with appropriate blade cleaner. Replace when teeth show wear.

Grinder Discs

Replace before they wear too thin. A disc that shatters while spinning is dangerous. Check for cracks before each use.

Motor Care

Brushless motors (common in modern power tools) need less maintenance than brushed motors. But they still need looking after:

  • Don't overheat the tool - if it's getting too hot, let it cool down
  • Don't force the tool beyond its capacity
  • Keep vents clear for proper cooling

Brushed motors need periodic brush replacement. Listen for changes in sound or reduced power - these suggest worn brushes.

Storage

Where you keep your tools matters.

  • Dry conditions - Moisture causes rust and damages electronics
  • Moderate temperature - Extremes of heat and cold shorten battery life
  • Protected from dust - Cases or tool bags help
  • Off concrete floors - Concrete draws moisture; store tools on shelving

Proper tool storage is an investment in your tools' longevity.

When to Get Professional Service

Some things need a proper repair:

  • Strange noises or vibrations
  • Reduced power that isn't battery-related
  • Smoke or burning smells
  • Damaged housings or guards
  • Electrical faults

Don't bodge safety-critical repairs. Get them done properly.

The Bottom Line

Five minutes of maintenance after each job. A quick check before each use. That's all it takes to keep your tools running for years.

Quality tools like DeWalt are built to last, but they still need you to do your part.
