Getting More from Your Cordless Tools: Battery Tips

Your cordless tools are only as good as their batteries. Treat them right and they'll serve you well. Abuse them and you'll be buying replacements sooner than necessary.

Here's what actually matters for battery life and performance.

Daily Use

Don't Fully Drain Regularly

Lithium-ion batteries don't have "memory effect" like old NiCad batteries. You don't need to fully drain them. In fact, regular full discharge shortens their life.

Recharge when they get low - around 20-30%. Don't wait for the tool to stop.

Avoid Overheating

Heat kills batteries. If a battery gets hot during heavy use, give it time to cool before charging. Never charge a hot battery.

Similarly, don't leave batteries in direct sunlight or in a hot vehicle.

Use the Right Charger

Use the charger that came with your tools, or a genuine replacement. Third-party chargers might not regulate correctly, potentially damaging batteries or reducing their lifespan.

Charging Best Practices

Don't Leave on Charger Indefinitely

Modern chargers are smart, but it's still best to remove batteries once charged. Trickle charging at 100% causes gradual degradation.

Charge at Room Temperature

Cold batteries charge inefficiently. Hot batteries charge dangerously. Let batteries reach room temperature before charging.

Charge Before Long Storage

If storing batteries for weeks or months, charge them to about 50%. Storing at full charge or completely empty shortens lifespan.

Storage

Keep Dry and Moderate

  • Store in a dry place - moisture damages contacts
  • Avoid extreme temperatures - both hot and cold
  • Off concrete floors - concrete draws moisture
  • Protected from dust and debris

Winter Storage

Cold batteries deliver less power. This is normal. Don't force work from a cold battery - bring it indoors to warm up first.

Never charge frozen or very cold batteries.

Maximising Runtime

Match Battery to Task

The DeWalt XR range offers different battery sizes. A 2.0Ah battery is lighter for overhead work. A 5.0Ah battery lasts longer for heavy ground-level work. Use what makes sense.

Keep Tools Maintained

A dull blade or bit makes the tool work harder, draining batteries faster. Sharp accessories mean better battery life.

Use the Right Speed

Variable speed tools draw less power at lower speeds. Use only as much speed as you need.

When to Replace

Batteries don't last forever. Signs it's time for replacement:

  • Noticeably shorter runtime than when new
  • Won't hold charge
  • Takes much longer to charge
  • Gets unusually hot during use
  • Visible damage or swelling (replace immediately)

Good quality batteries from major brands typically last 500-1000 charge cycles. That's several years of regular trade use.

Platform Considerations

Choosing a battery platform is choosing an ecosystem. DeWalt, Makita, Milwaukee, Bosch - once you're invested in batteries, adding tools that share them makes sense.

The initial investment in batteries and a charger is significant. Each additional tool only needs the bare tool, using existing batteries.

The Bottom Line

Treat batteries with basic care and they'll perform well for years. Abuse them and you'll pay for replacements. Simple maintenance habits make a real difference to your costs over time.
