Essential PPE: What You Actually Need on Site
PPE isn't optional on professional sites. It's a legal requirement, and more importantly, it's what stands between you and serious injury. Here's what you actually need and why.
Head Protection
Hard Hats
Required on construction sites. Protects against falling objects, bumps, and electrical contact. Replace them after any significant impact or every 5 years.
Look for:
- EN 397 certification
- Comfortable fit - you'll wear it all day
- Ventilation for hot weather
- Slots for attachments (ear defenders, visors)
Eye Protection
Flying debris, dust, sparks, chemical splashes - your eyes are vulnerable to all of them.
Safety Glasses
Minimum protection for most tasks. Should be impact-rated (EN 166). Wraparound styles offer better coverage.
Goggles
Better seal for dusty environments or chemical work. Essential when using angle grinders or similar tools.
Face Shields
Full-face protection for grinding, cutting, or chemical handling. Often used with safety glasses underneath.
Hearing Protection
Noise-induced hearing loss is permanent. If you have to raise your voice to be heard, you need hearing protection.
Ear Plugs
Disposable foam plugs are cheap and effective. Keep a supply in your tool bag. Rating of at least SNR 25 for most power tools.
Ear Defenders
More convenient than plugs for intermittent noise. Easier to put on and take off. Better for extended loud work.
Hand Protection
Work Gloves
Different gloves for different tasks:
- General purpose - Leather or synthetic for handling materials
- Cut resistant - For handling sharp materials or glass
- Chemical resistant - For solvents, oils, chemicals
- Impact protection - For heavy handling work

Foot Protection
Safety Boots
Steel or composite toe caps protect against dropped objects. Look for:
- S3 rating for construction (steel toe, steel midsole, water resistant)
- Slip-resistant soles
- Ankle support
- Comfort - you're on your feet all day
Respiratory Protection
Dust Masks
FFP2 or FFP3 for most construction dust. FFP3 for fine particles like silica dust (from cutting concrete/masonry).
Half-Face Respirators
Reusable with replaceable filters. Better seal than disposable masks. Essential for spray painting or heavy dust.
Hi-Vis Clothing
Required on most sites. Class 2 (vest) is minimum; Class 3 (full sleeves) offers more visibility. Our workwear range includes hi-vis options.
Fall Protection
Working at height (above 2m) requires fall protection:
- Harnesses for work where you might fall
- Lanyards attached to secure anchor points
- Training in how to use them correctly
Making It Work
Fit Matters
PPE that doesn't fit properly doesn't protect properly. Too loose and it shifts; too tight and you won't wear it.
Inspect Regularly
Damaged PPE is compromised PPE. Check before each use. Replace when worn.
Wear It
PPE in your bag doesn't protect you. The inconvenience is nothing compared to the injury it prevents.
