DeWalt FLEXVOLT 54V: When You Need More Power
DeWalt's FLEXVOLT system is clever engineering. The same battery runs at 18V in standard tools and 54V in FLEXVOLT tools. More power when you need it, backwards compatibility when you don't.
But do you actually need 54V? Here's our honest assessment.
How FLEXVOLT Works
The FLEXVOLT battery contains cells arranged so they can operate in series (54V) or parallel (18V). The tool determines which mode the battery operates in.
This means:
- FLEXVOLT batteries work in all 18V DeWalt tools
- 54V tools only work with FLEXVOLT batteries
- You're not buying into a completely new system

What 54V Gets You
More Power
54V tools deliver power approaching corded equivalents. The 54V circular saw cuts through materials that make 18V tools struggle. The 54V angle grinder handles heavy grinding work.
Larger Tools
Some tools just need more power to be practical. The FLEXVOLT mitre saw and table saw wouldn't be viable at 18V. 54V makes cordless versions of these tools genuinely useful.
Runtime on Demanding Tasks
Higher voltage means more efficient power delivery for demanding applications. Less heat, less strain on the battery.
Who Actually Needs FLEXVOLT?
Good Candidates
- Carpenters - Mitre saws, table saws, circular saws see real benefit
- Metalworkers - Heavy grinding demands power
- Site work without power - When you can't plug in, 54V keeps you working
- Anyone replacing corded tools - FLEXVOLT approaches corded performance
Probably Don't Need It
- Light DIY - 18V handles most home tasks
- Drilling and driving - 18V combi drills and impact drivers are plenty
- Budget-conscious buyers - 54V tools and batteries cost more
The FLEXVOLT Range
Standout Tools
DCS578 190mm Circular Saw - The flagship. Cuts 67mm at 90°. Genuinely approaches corded power. Great for timber work.
DCS727 250mm Mitre Saw - Cordless mitre saw that actually works. Game-changer for site work.
DCG418 125mm Angle Grinder - Handles heavy grinding without the cord. Popular with metalworkers.
Battery Considerations
FLEXVOLT batteries are larger and heavier than standard 18V batteries. The 6.0Ah FLEXVOLT is noticeably heftier than a 5.0Ah XR battery. This adds weight to tools but provides the capacity for demanding work.
Cost is higher too. A FLEXVOLT battery costs roughly 50% more than an equivalent XR battery. Budget accordingly.
Our Take
FLEXVOLT makes sense if you're replacing corded tools or doing work that demands more power than 18V provides. The backwards compatibility means you're not abandoning your existing 18V tools.
For most users, the 18V XR range is sufficient. FLEXVOLT is there when you need that extra capability.
