Tiling Basics: Foundation Skills for Quality Work
Tiling is a skill that takes practice to master, but understanding the fundamentals helps whether you're learning or instructing others.
Surface Preparation
Good tiling starts with surface prep:
- Surfaces must be flat, clean, and stable
- Prime porous surfaces
- Use tile backer boards in wet areas
- Check walls are plumb and square
Planning the Layout
Think before sticking:
- Find the centre of the area
- Dry-lay tiles to check layout
- Avoid thin slivers at edges
- Symmetry usually looks better
Setting Out
- Mark vertical and horizontal centre lines
- Use a batten to establish first row level
- Work from centre outward
- Check levels constantly
Adhesive Selection
- Ready-mixed: Convenient for walls
- Powdered: Better bond, essential for floors
- Flexible: For movement-prone substrates
- Rapid-set: When you need to grout quickly
Applying Adhesive
- Use correct notched trowel size
- Apply at 45-degree angle
- Back-butter large or heavy tiles
- Only spread what you can tile before it skins
Cutting Tiles
Different cuts need different tools:
- Manual cutter: Straight cuts in ceramic
- Wet saw: Accurate cuts in any tile
- Grinder: Complex shapes and angles
- Hole saw: Circular cutouts
Grouting
- Wait until adhesive has set
- Mix grout to thick paste consistency
- Force into joints with float at 45 degrees
- Clean excess before it dries hard
- Shape joints with profiler or finger
Common Mistakes
- Insufficient adhesive coverage
- Not using spacers (or using wrong size)
- Rushing and losing level
- Grouting too soon
- Not sealing around baths and trays
Finishing
- Seal grout lines in wet areas
- Use silicone at corners and junctions
- Clean tiles thoroughly when complete
- Wait before exposing to water
