How to Unblock a Drain: Methods from Simple to Serious
When Water Won't Go Down
Blocked drains are one of the most common household problems. Before calling a plumber, there's plenty you can try yourself. Here's the full toolkit of drain-clearing methods, from simple to serious.
Identify the Blockage
Signs and what they mean:
- Single fixture slow: blockage in that trap or waste
- Multiple fixtures: blockage in shared drain
- All fixtures: main drain blockage
- Gurgling from other fixtures when you empty one: ventilation issue or partial blockage
Method 1: Boiling Water
For minor blockages, especially grease:
- Boil kettle
- Pour directly down plughole in stages
- Let hot water work for few seconds between pours
- Run tap to check flow
When it works: Grease and soap buildup
Caution: Don't use on PVC pipes in older properties - can soften joints
Method 2: Plunger
The classic approach:
- Block overflow hole with wet cloth
- Cover plughole completely with plunger
- Fill basin with enough water to cover plunger cup
- Pump vigorously 15-20 times
- Pull plunger off sharply - creates suction
- Repeat several times
Tips:
- Petroleum jelly on plunger rim improves seal
- Cup plungers for sinks, flange plungers for toilets
- Patience matters - may take several attempts
Method 3: Chemical Drain Cleaners
Use with caution:
- Follow instructions exactly
- Ensure ventilation
- Never mix products
- Protect eyes and skin
- Don't use if drain is completely blocked (chemicals just sit there)
Natural alternative:
- Pour half cup bicarbonate of soda down drain
- Follow with half cup vinegar
- Cover and wait 15-30 minutes
- Flush with hot water
Method 4: Clean the Trap
For sink and basin blockages:
- Place bucket under trap
- Unscrew trap access (bottom of U-bend) or remove entire trap
- Let water drain into bucket
- Clear debris from trap
- Check pipe above and below trap
- Reassemble and test
Tips:
- Traps collect hair, soap, and gunk
- Clean regularly to prevent blockages
- Replace worn washers while you're there
Method 5: Drain Snake/Auger
For blockages further down:
- Remove trap or access cleaning eye
- Feed snake into pipe
- Rotate handle to work through blockage
- Push through and pull back several times
- Retrieve snake and debris
- Flush with water

Method 6: Wet Vacuum
If you have a wet/dry vacuum:
- Set to wet mode
- Create tight seal over plughole
- Use maximum suction
- Can pull blockages back out
Toilet-Specific Techniques
Toilet plunging:
- Use flange plunger (the one with the extended lip)
- Ensure plunger is submerged
- Push and pull to create pressure
- May take several minutes
Toilet auger:
- Specifically designed for toilets
- Protected end won't scratch porcelain
- Reaches further than plunger can
Outside Drain Blockages
For gully and drain blockages:
- Remove grate and clear visible debris
- Use drain rods for further blockages
- Always turn rods clockwise (prevents unscrewing)
- Work systematically towards main drain
When to Call a Professional
- Main drain blockage affecting whole house
- Repeated blockages despite clearing
- Sewage backing up
- Multiple properties affected (council responsibility)
- Suspected root ingress or pipe collapse
- You've tried everything and it's still blocked
Prevention
- Use drain covers to catch hair
- Don't pour grease down drains - bin it
- Run hot water after washing up
- Monthly baking soda and vinegar treatment
- Keep drain covers clear of leaves
- Only flush toilet paper - nothing else
The Bottom Line
Most drain blockages are clearable with basic tools and techniques. Start simple, work up to more serious methods. Prevention is better than cure - a few minutes of maintenance saves hours of clearing blockages. Know when to call a professional though - some blockages need proper equipment and expertise.
