Garden Tool Maintenance: Keep Your Kit Working
Garden tools work hard and get neglected. A bit of regular maintenance keeps them working effectively and extends their life by years. Here's how to look after your garden equipment.
Cleaning After Use
Soil is corrosive. Leaving it on tools causes rust and degradation. After each use:
- Knock off loose soil
- Wipe down with a rag
- For stubborn soil, use a wire brush
- Dry thoroughly before storing
Rust Prevention
Metal garden tools need protection. A light coating of oil (WD-40, 3-in-One, or similar) prevents rust formation. Some gardeners keep a bucket of oily sand - push tools in after cleaning for quick protection.
Sharpening Basics
Dull tools make gardening harder work. Different tools need different approaches:
- Spades: File the cutting edge occasionally
- Secateurs: Diamond sharpener or fine file on the bevelled blade only
- Shears: Sharpen the flat face against the anvil blade
- Mower blades: Remove and grind or file, balance afterwards
Handle Care
Wooden handles dry out and crack. Annual treatment with linseed oil keeps them supple. Check for splinters and cracks - sand smooth or replace damaged handles before they fail mid-task.
Power Tool Maintenance
Petrol mowers and strimmers need:
- Oil changes according to schedule
- Air filter cleaning or replacement
- Spark plug checks
- Fuel system attention if stored over winter
Battery tools are simpler - keep them clean, store batteries partially charged, and keep connections free of debris.
Winter Storage
Before winter storage:
- Clean everything thoroughly
- Oil all metal surfaces
- Run petrol engines dry or add fuel stabiliser
- Store in a dry place
Spring arrives faster when tools are ready to go.
