Screwdriver Guide: Getting the Basics Right

Driver Types

Common screw head types need matching drivers:

• Phillips (cross): Designed to cam out under torque
• Pozidriv (star cross): Better grip than Phillips, marked with lines on head
• Slotted (flat): Oldest type, tends to slip
• Torx (star): High torque without cam-out
• Hex (Allen): For socket head screws
• Robertson (square): Common in North America

Size Matching

Using the correct size prevents damage:

• Phillips: PH0, PH1, PH2, PH3 (PH2 most common)
• Pozidriv: PZ0, PZ1, PZ2, PZ3
• Torx: T10, T15, T20, T25, T30, etc.

A driver that doesn't fill the screw head will slip and strip it.

Handle Design

Handles matter for comfort and torque:

• Larger handles give more torque
• Soft-grip reduces fatigue
• Round handles allow spinning
• Hex bolsters allow wrench assistance

Blade Quality

Good screwdrivers have:

• Hardened tips that don't wear quickly
• Precise machining for good fit
• Black oxide or similar finish for grip
• Full-length blades for strength

Electricians' Screwdrivers

Insulated screwdrivers for electrical work have:

• VDE rating (1000V typically)
• Double-insulated construction
• Covered shafts to prevent shorts
