PPE Essentials: Protecting Yourself on Site

Personal protective equipment isn't optional - it's the last line of defence between you and injury. Here's what every tradesperson should have and use.

Eye Protection

Your eyes can't be replaced. Wear protection for:

  • Any cutting, grinding, or drilling
  • Working with chemicals
  • Overhead work where debris might fall
  • Anywhere dust or particles are generated

Safety glasses for light work, goggles for dust and chemicals, face shields for grinding and heavy cutting.

Hearing Protection

Noise-induced hearing loss is permanent and cumulative. Protect your ears around:

  • Power tools (especially grinders, saws, routers)
  • Compressors and generators
  • Impact tools
  • Any prolonged exposure over 85dB

Disposable foam plugs work well. Ear defenders are better for intermittent noise. Some premium options include built-in radio or Bluetooth.

Respiratory Protection

Dust and fumes damage lungs over time. Choose protection based on hazard:

  • FFP2 masks: General dust protection
  • FFP3 masks: Fine particles, hardwood dust, MDF
  • Half-face respirators: Paint fumes, chemicals
  • Powered respirators: Prolonged work in contaminated environments

Hand Protection

Different tasks need different gloves:

  • General work gloves: Abrasion resistance, grip
  • Cut-resistant gloves: When handling sharp materials
  • Chemical gloves: For solvents and chemicals
  • Rigger gloves: Heavy handling work

Foot Protection

Safety footwear protects against:

  • Dropped objects (steel or composite toe)
  • Penetration from below (midsole protection)
  • Slips and falls (appropriate sole)
  • Electrical hazards (rated footwear)

Head Protection

Hard hats are mandatory on many sites. Even without that requirement, head protection makes sense anywhere objects could fall.

High-Visibility Clothing

Required near vehicles and machinery. Class 2 for pedestrian areas, Class 3 for high-risk zones.

Making It Habit

PPE only works if you use it. Keep equipment accessible, maintained, and replaced when worn. A few seconds putting on protection beats a lifetime of regret.
