Measuring Tools Every Tradesperson Needs
"Measure twice, cut once" is the oldest advice in the trades - and still the best. Here's the measuring equipment that earns its place in a professional toolkit.
The Essentials
Tape Measure
The foundation. Look for:
- 5m minimum (8m better for most trades)
- 25mm wide blade (holds rigid longer)
- Clear markings (metric, imperial optional)
- Durable case
- Magnetic tip (useful but not essential)
Buy two - one will vanish. Decent tape measures don't cost much but cheap ones frustrate daily.
Spirit Level
Multiple lengths useful:
- 230mm torpedo - fits in pocket, quick checks
- 600mm - general work, fitting
- 1200mm - longer reference, fitting kitchens and doors
Accuracy matters. A level that's not level is worse than useless. Buy quality.
Combination Square
Marks 90 and 45 degree angles. Essential for accurate marking and checking squareness. 300mm size suits most work.
Level Two
Laser Level
Projects level and plumb lines across a room. Speeds up marking dramatically. Worth it for regular fitting work. Check our laser level range.
Laser Distance Measure
Point and click measurement. Faster than tape for room dimensions. Calculates area and volume. Our laser distance measures start from reasonable prices.
Angle Finder
Digital or analogue. Essential for cutting accurate mitres in rooms that aren't square (most rooms).
Specialist Tools
Marking Gauges
For parallel lines from an edge. Useful in woodworking and fitting.
Vernier Calipers
Precise measurement of small items. Essential for metalwork and engineering.
Feeler Gauges
Measuring small gaps. Automotive and machinery work.
Profile Gauge
Copies curved shapes for cutting around obstacles. Flooring and fitting work.
Quality vs Price
Measuring tools need to be accurate. A cheap tape measure that's 2mm off in every metre compounds into significant errors.
Levels are especially critical - if it's wrong, everything you fit with it is wrong too.
Spend appropriately on measuring tools. They guide everything else you do.
Looking After Them
- Clean tape measure blades - dirt affects retraction
- Check level accuracy periodically (flip and compare)
- Store properly - dropping levels damages accuracy
- Replace batteries in laser tools before they die completely
